There are many. Most of my frustration lies within the town I live in. First of all our local paper has an employment listing in it's paper. Normally the same two jobs that no one wants over and over again. Then there is one location only for jobs online. That
website lists marketing jobs among the tons of other jobs. Occasionally there will be listings done by companies directly. The majority of other jobs are posted by staffing services.
Here is my rant.
These staffing companies work directly with the human resource departments at various advertising and marketing agencies in the city. They will then post the jobs on the site, most likely directly after already having someone for he job in place. There for the job listed is completely shit. If there is a posting you normally do an online application, attach your resume, and pray for a call back or a simple reply email. Nope that won't happen. I even tried calling one staffing company yesterday twice and left the same message, twice, without even the courtesy of a call back. Guess professionalism is gone in that profession. If they do call you back they have to go through their process of having you come in for an "interview" so that they can get to know what you are looking for better. Then they are off to find you a position. Oh yeah, you have to call them every other day to remind them that you are still without paycheck and a meaningful job that doesn't cause your eyes to bleed. And if you are calling them that means that they can't find anything for you.
Here's another rant:
And the companies that are located in Portland do great work. Very creative marketing strategies and ad agencies that do come up with a few decent commercials for companies. However their hiring practices leave a lot to be desired. I believe that it's
Channel 6 WCSH that is doing a story on why students who graduate from Maine colleges just get the fuck out of the state once they graduate. I'll tell you one of the biggest reasons. Opportunities. Opportunities that exist but only exist if you spent ten years in NYC or Boston only to come back to Maine for less pay and less time off. There are a lot of creative people that come out of colleges in this state (hello...me....) and these companies don't want to provide the opportunities to those of us who wish to start and finish their career in the location that they are in. Gaining the experience needed to work in these companies is almost like a crap shoot. You may have enough but you may not.
I've personally worked too hard to receive another degree that I can use to my advantage. I've found something that I know I'm good at and would enjoy working at on a daily basis. Finding the company that will take the chance and let someone like me work and learn how to make things I do better and more cohesive. This, in turn, makes the company better and more efficient.
Now I have to do my daily every other day calls to remind those people that I'm still looking. And looking. My resume is on
Monster.com if you have a position for me. Anyone? Buehler?
